This set is the perfect fit for him. He uses it almost every day since I got it. He is interested in carving wood, so I wanted to buy him quality tools that were not expensive. In fact, I have some expensive carving tools, although this set provides tools of the same shape that do the same job for a fraction of the price. Smaller hands will feel right at home with these handles. A case is a much better option than the pouches that come with most kit sets. As a bonus, the kit also came with some pieces of wood to get started.

It was for my husband who was going to practice whittling, so I bought the kit. This is a good starter kit, according to him. A whetstone, a block of wood in various sizes, and other tools are included in the kit as well. Since the knives were sharp, he was able to whittle a gnome easily (I also ordered a book that has detailed instructions for how to do this). Having whittled for the first time was an enjoyable experience for him.

Ultimately, this is not a great set, but it is also not terrible. When my son used it for the first time, one of the heads broke. There's nothing super-special about it This set is very durable. Getting him a better set of tools will be my next step if he likes carving as much as I think he will.

If you're eager to learn how to carve, this is the set for you. Over the course of a few days, I went over all the sample blocks of wood I had collected. You will need a sharpening stone since they tend to dull quicker than other tools I have used but they can be sharpened just fine after a while.
