That is not the case. When you compare prices, they don't even come close to matching. Any way you look at it, it's a no-brainer. These tools cost a quarter of what Swiss-made tools do. Pfeil tools, on the other hand, are excellent and will outlast you. However, if you're new to mallet carving or want to upgrade, these are excellent tools from a reputable manufacturer. While the Swiss Made tools feel nicer, the Flex Cut tools are still amazing and carve just as well as anything else in my collection.
It does not, in fact. See what the Wood is Good mallet can do for you. It is surrounded by a hard rubber that absorbs some of the shock.
The length of the piece is ten inches in total. The length of the blade from handle to blade top is 4 11/16 inches.
No, but one of them is extremely shallow.

Flexcut gouges, particularly the larger mallet gouges, have a different feel and weight than traditional woodcarving tools and could be a valuable addition to the carver's toolkit. br>However, Flexcut quality has declined significantly. With poor assembly, their tools' fit and finish are becoming "mass market cheap" - Poor finish on the handles, rough edges, etc. Tool steel and handles are skewed badly and/or inconsistently aligned. Also, the wooden "storage boxes" are extremely cheap and fragile; a leather or canvas roll, or even just a thick cardboard box, would provide better and longer-lasting protection than the wooden box they include. br>I'll keep the set I ordered and tweak it myself, but I won't recommend them until they improve their quality control.
I needed these chisels to carve a few Hemlock logs, so I ordered them. The steel is in good condition, the shapes are accurate, and the handles are sturdy. I like their overall size, which puts them in the "not so small-but-not-too-small-but-not-too-small" category. "Not too big" is one of the categories. I wish the handles had iron loops to limit any spread from mallet blows, but they seem to withstand my pounding quite well. The included band aids made me laugh. The chisels are a little sharp, but with a little honing, they can be used like razors.
This set has made me very happy. These chisels surprised me with their weight and size. With relative ease, I was able to work on some seasoned Black Walnut, seasoned Mulberry, and green Sugar Maple. Kerps a fine edge and can be used with a mallet. These gouges were put to the ultimate test in the Mulberry. The cut is a little difficult, but it has a great finish.
The first set from Flexcut came with something inside the box to keep the tools from moving around, and all kits should follow suit. The inspecting tools appear to be made of thicker metal than the rest of the kit, which was to be expected. Stropp will need to touch up the edges a little, but only a little. We'd be outside right now if it weren't for the rain.
I've been using Flexcut products for a long time and have never been disappointed, until today. When I first opened it, all of the chisels and gouges were jumbled up and clanking against each other from the shipping process. Any contact with another metal tool will damage the cutting edges, as anyone who carves knows. Each tool's cradle had broken in half and had become unglued from the wood back panel.
A djembe drum is being carved out. This set of gouges is exactly what I was looking for. It arrived sharpened, with good handles, a good balance, and a good selection for what I needed to do.
It's becoming increasingly difficult to find good carving tools. I'm glad I gave them a try. So far, they've been far superior to what I expected to find. Strudy sharp appears to maintain its sharpness. I'm going to go out and buy more of them right now.
I'm working with North Eastern Pine and it's amazing how much wood you can remove with so little effort; I've always preferred Flexcut for softer woods and Henry Taylors for harder ones. Flexcut are excellent beginners' tools. Maintain your chip production.
