Mora knives make up the majority of my collection. But I bought this one and wow, it's just as good as my Mora's for half the price, and I've already carved two spoons and can't say enough good things about it. Razor sharp with a comfortable handle. I'm going to get another one. @whidbeyhandcarved is a popular Instagram account.
The only minor drawback is that after a few hours of use, the oak handle will discolor your hands. It's not a big deal, but I wanted to bring it up. br>br>I'm planning on purchasing at least one more, so it's not a major issue. br>br>(edited to include a photo of the first knife-carved project).
Previously, I had relied on pocket knives or homemade carving knives. I ultimately went with them because of the low price and positive reviews. The knife arrived in excellent condition, with a nice edge that required only minor cleaning and stropping to achieve an extremely sharp blade that can be easily maintained with stropping. I would strongly suggest it.
Edited to add that the item was replaced with reasonable satisfaction by the seller. After seeing the crack forming in mine, they quickly sent a replacement. br>br>I read the reviews and saw that some people had received rusted knives. When I got mine, I carefully examined it. I noticed that it was sharp, that the handle was comfortable, and that the tang was slightly turned in the knife, but not enough to affect carving. I noticed a crack forming on the cutting edge after carving soft woods (pine) for a week. I've been carving soft woods with my knife, which I haven't dropped. I'm no longer confident in my ability to use the knife, especially since I was planning to carve semi-hard woods (cherry and oak). br>br>Before this, I was a big fan of the knife because it was great for quickly "chunking" large pieces of wood. Beaver Craft also sold me a detail knife, a strop, and a carrying case, all of which are fantastic. This knife, on the other hand, disappointed me. Having purchased several items from Beaver Craft, I'd like to know if there is anything that can be done about this knife.
I'm brand new to carving, but after attempting it with a regular penknife, I realized I'd never be able to carve anything recognizable with such a blunt blade. Because the reviews were positive and the price was reasonable, I requested this. This knife is VERY SHARP, as evidenced by my bloody fingers! br>I would have preferred a sheath for it instead of the paper cover that came with it, so I will make my own sheath, but that is the only criticism I have, and it is minor.
This was something I expected to have to work on. This is fantastic. br>br>I expected to have to work on this, but I arrived razor-sharp, leaving a large bald spot on my arm. br>br>I've used it on unidentified greenwood, walnut, and balsa; the only issue I had was cutting walnut across the grain. br>br>While I was working, I swiped my fine grit stone a few times to keep it sharp.
It's larger and has a better grip than I anticipated. What amazed me the most was that it only took a few passes on my strop to get it to truly razor-sharp condition. sharp. Most companies send it rough and sharp, which is fine for most people, but I prefer my knives to be not only sharp but also slick so they can slide through the wood. It only took a couple of minutes with a strop to get it. This was a great purchase, and I'll be looking for this company again in the future. My name is Dan, and I'd like to introduce myself to you. I'm a knifeaholic with somewhere between two and three hundred knives in my collection, and I'm still adding to it!.
As a complete beginner with only a few of the most basic projects under my belt (yay for new Covid hobbies! ), I find that this knife is invaluable in assisting me in establishing a general shape. I do have a more expensive knife that my husband bought for me, but as a beginner, I'm not picky enough to notice much of a difference, so I'd happily recommend this knife to newbies looking to try out a new hobby on a budget. It worked perfectly!.
