Questions & Answers

What is the best fabric for napped wool fabrics?

During manufacturing, the carders are made of heavy duty wool for use with raw wool. Fabrics woven would NOT be suitable for use with them As the thread snagged and pulled, they would tear.

Before I attach the handles, should I drill a pilot hole?

While I wasn't required to, if you want to just make sure you don't dig too Pilot holes are drilled in just about everything I do.

Can you tell me how big the brush surface is? Thanks so much! ?

A total of 3 inches of wood are above the red rubber area that covers the teeth (the rubber extends past the actual teeth area and the wood extends beyond that). The dimensions of this canvas are 75 inches by 7 inches A 25" waist. Hence, the paddles are larger than those dimensions, but the teeth covered by the paddles have a threefold area. The dimensions of this canvas are 75 inches by 7 inches 25" in height.

Could this be used for alpaca fiber?

There is no problem using alpaca fiber with it. The balm is also good for llamas, sheep, goats, and what do you know, even camels. As far as cat fur goes, I have used it. For making kitten mittens, I have saved the fur from my cat and will use it on my drop spindle.

Not a cheap product, but a great one
4/5

A hand carder such as this one works well. Obviously, you will have to assemble the hands carders yourself (the wooden handle needs to be connected to the main part with the teeth, each comes with a screw). The handles need to be secured by gluing the ends where they will join and then screwing them into place for additional security. While they work very well for carding wool, they do cost a little more The device is very simple, and the manufacturer's name is primarily what you pay for.

wool and like how a carder softens up the fleece so that I can spin it and it's not too tough on my fingers, which helps me spin the softer fleece. For me, Ashford carders are the best.

The size is a bit too big for me, and they do not pull as well as I had expected.

Traditionally, hand carders have been used

A little bit of a gap exists between the handles. As for the devices themselves, they work well, I just need to acquire the skills to use.
