If you're asking if you can put a fondant figure on top of a piece of this wire and stick the other end into your cake, the answer is yes, as long as your figure isn't too big and heavy. This wire has a good amount of rigidity to it. However, because the wire is cloth-covered, and the cloth will absorb any moisture from its surroundings, I'm not sure it's a good idea. Unless you're planning on using it for something else? (I use it to make doll clothes, but I'm not very good at cake decorating.)

They come in handy when I'm baking. Working with them is a pleasure. It's a little stiff at first, but the more you work with it, the better it holds its shape.

It's a thick wire, as your other answer stated, but the size of your tree star will determine how thick it is. I wouldn't recommend anything larger than eight inches in diameter or that is too chunky or solid. (On the other hand, if you make it too heavy, your tree may collapse.) If you're looking for a light-hearted way to spend your time, this is the place to be. If all you want to do is wrap the tip of your tree with wire and coil it around the bottom of your ornament, your main concern is likely to be getting the wire to cooperate (yes, it's stiff; use pliers), nothing more. It would have to be folded a few times before it could be used. To achieve this, I used pipe cleaners. Only one fold was required, and once sewn in, they stayed put without puncturing the cloth.
