The black object is a three-inch bushing with a one-inch rod opening. I'm not sure how to get rid of it. You could certainly do so. A one-inch rod is what I'd look for.

This was purchased as a toy for my cat. She is enthralled by the crinkly sound. feel. Unfortunately, this paper isn't as stiff and sturdy as I'd like (it's not as strong as the brown paper Amazon uses for shipping protection), but it'll do for now. It's not so bad if I double it. The cat enters the room. She's having a great time going out through the tunnels I make for her. Roll is of a decent size. There should be a lot of tunnels built.
A standard grocery bag is much thicker than this paper. Before purchasing, I read the questions, and the seller stated that it was slightly thicker than a grocery bag. Not true. For some things, it might be sufficient. My project, on the other hand, is probably about the same thickness as cheap copy paper.
This product is just thick enough to prevent it from being visible. It's easy to wrap items because it's see-through (gift wrapping) and just thin enough. I haven't used it as a tablecloth for a large buffet-style spread on our table yet. But I don't see why it wouldn't work out beautifully. It isn't thick enough to withstand spills, but that isn't a deal breaker for me because it gives it more versatility (it can also be used for wrapping).
I cut a lot of glass for my mosaic projects, and the newspaper wasn't doing a good job of protecting my table or containing the glass shards, which were all over the place. It's amazing how much of a difference using this paper has made. It's durable enough to keep all the glass off my table. Instead of strewn across my table, glass shards have landed on the paper. I can also grout on it, which makes it much easier to keep the mess contained to the paper. It's simple to clean up; all I have to do is fold the mess of glass shards and grout in the paper and toss it in the trash.
In fact, because this paper is thin and flimsy, I usually double it. I didn't bother returning it because I needed it, but I will not order it again.
I was expecting a smooth paper, similar to what butchers used to use to wrap meats, but this feels more porous, like a grocery bag.
There are a lot of other things you can do with it, but this is my personal favorite!.
It's not fancy, but neither are my shelves or the contents of my shelves. It works, as long as you keep it dry.
