Questions & Answers
When I use wood as a backdrop, I make sure it's smooth and clean. If necessary, sand. Second, I choose whether to paint a background color or leave the wood alone. I like to use a varnish to adhere the paper to the surface and to apply a topcoat immediately afterward for any decoupage. I'll also use dried Mod Podge and an iron, but I'm not a fan of MP as a topcoat. I prefer varnish for rice paper and other light-weight items. Anita's makes one for crafting, and I have one labeled varnis that I got from Europe. The piece looks best when the paper is torn around the image and does not show if it is placed on a color that matches the paper's background color. Cover the paper in plastic wrap and gently press it down with your fingers or a beater to smooth out any wrinkles.
