Our leather craft project required the purchase of this hammer. The number of hammers now stands at about 19. Is something wrong? Why is it necessary to have so many hammers, mauls, It is leather craftspeople who make leather. A hammer like this is only used to hammer stitch lines down. In addition to having hammers for working with tools such as punches and riveters, we also have a hammer Ideally, the face of a hammer used to hammer the face of a hand crafted leather piece should be clean, well-shaped, polished, and pristine. This is a pretty good hammer but not perfect. It is very difficult to remove a round indent in leather if you don't hammer the stitchline or leather with the face of the hammer coming down perfectly flat on the leather. The thicker the leather, the more likely this is to apply. Unfortunately, I haven't tried all of the weights, but anything around 8 ounces will show marks, even a really dense english bridle. That might be due in part to a lack of technique on the crafter's part, but part of it has to do with the shape of the hammer head. This piece is a little too sharp, it should be rounded just a little the way if you strike just a little against the flat portion you will get just a slight dimpling of the face, rather than a flat hard edge that cannot be burnished off. **1. **2. think the head of this hammer has some kind of urethane coating, rather than lacquer. It is coated with some kind of material. In my opinion, it is supposed to smooth out the face of the hammer like if it had been polished (which it hasn't been to the degree that is necessary). As I was reprofile the edge of the hammer face, to round it so it won't leave impressions, I found that it was binding my sandpaper with some kind It may be easier for me to chemically strip the head of the hammer so I can get down to the After that, I will polish both surfaces of the face (well, actually both surfaces of the face) so that there will be The hammer is really heavy, the head is fixed in place well (we have yet to go to whacktown), so confidence is instilled in you. You can handle that. It's all right. The shape looks like an octagon. As far as I can tell, that is a matter of personal taste. It's quite dark, but again that's a matter of taste, we don't buy tools because they're cool to look at, we buy them to accomplish a task and because they're We think this hammer, in itself, looks pretty cool, regardless of whether the hammer is functional or not. If we're given a wooden tool with a handle to swing, like a hammer, an axe, or a shovel, we'll scrape off the lacquer and apply cold pressed linseed oil to it. Although it might not be as efficient as some of the super high end French leather working hammers available, all in all, it appears to be a competent tool. We recommend this product to leather crafters on a budget as it does require a little work to make it better, but it is pretty good right out of the box.
As for the packaging, it was great, there was no problem with that, but upon opening the package, the protective coating had separated from the peen, which can mar leather if it is used on I would have read the other reviews before purchasing it but I was just so excited I didn't.
I had to wait a long time for the package to be shipped. Despite its protective coating, there is rust underneath, plus it is slightly loose at the top. There's also no smoothness to the face. One of the better ones didn't make it to me.
Weight is good, and I like having it in my hand (small to large for women). It's well made.
I like that it has a round flat end and a square end and that it has a flat end and round end. Hammering edges after skiving and gluing is good. The heads on both ends are large enough not to leave tool marks on the leather I was using (Horween Dublin). This is a great value over boutique made hammers that cost three times as much.
A great hammer to use when working with leather. It is a great size and weight.
There is real quality to this hammer. It is well balanced and has an attractive handle.
Metal at the heads is softer than the rest of the metal. The hammer has already dinged the wall, so I have to be careful where I use it from now on.
