In general, these are flat on the bottom, and do work on their own until you put leaf or trimming into them, but a stand is needed when you put anything in them. While they do not always leak when laying down sideways, sometimes they do, so keeping them upright is a good idea. There is even room to put a small tree branch on top so you can stick it in. It will expand when you put a milk weed leaf in it. You can bring in my Polyphemus larvae if you want, it will keep a steady supply all day and all In my photos, I have an image of a small bug keeper tank that would fit them nicely. It is one of the things we use regularly I'm in love with them! It's always nice for my kids to bring flowers to their teachers, but glass vases aren't the best to take into school alone these are a great alternative (they also look a lot nicer than using paper towels in a Ziploc bag)

One of our contracts requires us to add these to the stems of orchids when we complete our work for a florist. I love it. Not a big deal. We could not have asked for more. They have been on my order for the past couple years.
