A second person answered that it is sterilized so that it cannot I found that this particular spanish moss comes alive, and as long as it has water, light, and a tree outside, then it will continue to grow. Mine didn't require sunlight, and I kept it alive for months just by misting and providing light. In the end, I killed it because I forgot about it during a stressful time.
