These are sharp, and depending on the child's skill level and desire to keep them in a secure location, they will suffice.

I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't work.

Is it possible to use this to make a mask out of it?

I believe that is the case. if the mask is made of clay I've used them to do some minor sculpting and carving on my bowls, as well as scratching to add appliques; there are so many different tips, and I've found them all to be quite useful.

Will these work with gourds that have a hard shell?

I'm learning to sculpt for the first time, and I have no prior experience. I purchased clay, only to discover that I required additional equipment. These tools appealed to me because they were made of wood and were reasonably priced for a collection. This is all you'll need if you're a beginner. Each tool is duel tipped, which means you get two tools for the price of one. I don't use most of the tools, but it's nice to have them on hand. They come with a simple clear case with a flip down top to keep them safe. It's nothing fancy, but it's functional. They're light, and the wood is smooth, so they'll fit comfortably in your palm.

The white brush, on the other hand, pulled out the first time I used the double-sided brush. It's possible that I'll have to glue it back in, but it shouldn't be necessary. The other tools appeared to be in good working order, and I had no issues with them.
