Two different teachers suggested the uart 400 grade paper to me. It was easy to use for me. It does a good job of holding the pastel in place. I did purchase the 600 grade because it was less expensive, but I was dissatisfied with it. I've painted with oils and watercolors, and I used to think pastels weren't for me, but now I'm a big fan. Have fun with them; they're more forgiving than watercolors and allow you to get a lot of detail.
The paper has a tooth or grit to it that keeps the pastel in place while you work and allows you to work in multiple layers.
The surface has been sanded to a much finer texture. A stick of pastel chalk would be devoured by ordinary sandpaper. I gave it a shot once and was disappointed with the results. Professionally sanded pastel paper is well worth the investment.
UArt paper has a sandpaper texture and is available in a variety of grades. Most pastel artists I know prefer the mid-grade 400. The paper curls slightly, but this is usually not an issue. Accepts a lot of layers. Pastelmat has a smoother surface and a firmer backing, but it also holds a lot of pastel. Both are things I use. Pastelmat is a good choice if you're going to use pan pastels because it's not abrasive to the applicators. It's a good idea to look up videos on YouTube that compare the papers.

Photo of a product that is misleading. I'm very pleased with the paper I received. It was exactly what I was looking for, and it is of excellent quality. If you're going to buy it, just make sure you re-use it. read the "10-Point Checklist" In the title, there is a part that says "pack" You may believe there are 30 pieces of paper in the picture, but you will be disappointed when only 10 arrive at your door.
This has a much too coarse texture. It depletes my pastels and makes getting crisp lines more difficult. You could light it if you're going for a casual look. Keep in mind that the sandpaper texture will be noticeable. That feeling is too much for some people. I'm going back to Pastelmat because it's not any cheaper. br>Also, if you like to tape your paper to your work surface, keep in mind that tape will not adhere to this paper.
As a beginner pastelist with less than a year of experience, I can confidently state that Uart is one of the best pastel papers available. Period. I started out with unsanded papers when I first began painting. I "made mud" on those unsanded papers rather than layering color in complex or beautiful ways. br>br>Uart has a sanded, sandpaper-like surface. It can hold a lot of color layers, even more than you could hope for if you use a spray fixative on the first few. I'm a big guy who likes to lift a lot of weight. Even though I'm a left-handed painter (which I'm working on), I can get 8 or 9 layers of color on Uart, which is a fantastic pastel support in my opinion!br>br>Uart can handle any type of underpainting you want to use. Watercolor, oil stains, alcohol washes, and other mediums are all safe to use on it. The most significant disadvantage of using Uart is that it curls. It's not a big deal to me because I frame most of my work. While painting on it, some people believe that the surface is too rough for their fingertips. I wouldn't recommend aggressive finger blending on it, but I've had no problems with it otherwise. br>br>Uart is available in a variety of grits. The number 400, which is in the middle of the scale, is one of my favorites. range. It's a lot of fun to work on, and the nice results make me want to paint more. It comes highly recommended!.
This is the second time I've used this paper. The price was reasonable and the product was exactly as described. EXCEPT: Packaged in an envelope for delivery, USPS delivered, and folded to fit into mailbox When folded, art paper isn't very useful!.
I've never worked with pastels before, and I've never used UArt. It took an eternity to receive the product, and the package was opened with paint on the outside, making it appear that the outer package had been reused. When I looked at the back of the card, all it said was "400. " I'm not sure if this is the right paper or if it was purchased at a hardware store due to my ignorance. The paper also curls badly, causing a crease in the middle of my paintings as a result of trying to compensate in the opposite direction to flatten it out.
Given that I only received an empty box, even one star is excessively high. I'm serious. I'm attempting to obtain a refund, but so far have had no success.
When the package arrived, the label had been ripped off and the package had been opened. I didn't give it a second thought. I just set it aside until today, when I opened it and discovered ten sheets of what appeared to be 400 grain sandpaper purchased at a hardware store. What! It's too late to send it back now.
There are teeth in paper. Colored pencils and pastels go well together. I'll most likely increase to a 500-word essay. PanPastel softt tools were sanded to 600 grit to see if a smoother sanded surface would extend their life.
