Questions & Answers

Is this a technique that can be used with watercolors?

I've used it a lot for Bible Journaling with inktense watercolor pencils and it works great.

I started with "art basics" (because I didn't have prime), but it didn't work well with my copic markers. Is this applicable to all types of gesso? What makes this company's product superior to others?

Dina Wakley can be covered by ANY media, in my opinion. Copics, Microns, Tombow Dual Tips, watercolor, colored pencils, acrylic paint, ink, and a variety of other mediums have all been used. Watercolors, watercolor pens, and alcohol pens (Copics) all seem to slide right off Art Basics, but Dina Wakley does not. I use this in my Bible and find that if I use two thin coats of clear gesso first, there is no bleed through with any media.

Is it possible to use this technique with acrylic paint?

You don't need it if you're working in your Bible on Bible paper because a thin layer of acrylic will not bleed through.

Is this something you can drink?

liquid with a creamy texture

In preparation for painting, it works well on unprimed canvas
4/5

I bought this as a cheaper alternative to the more expensive Golden gesso medium for canvas and board, and I used it to paint acrylic impasto on unprimed cotton canvas boards. When brushing it on the canvas boards, I was very pleased with how fluid it was. The brush's ridges settle out and the surface becomes smooth. It gives acrylic paints with a lot of body a lot of "tooth. " It does appear to take a little longer for each coat of gesso to dry (I usually do two or three, lightly sanding in between), but that's fine with me. Because of the gesso's fluidity, a little goes a long way, making this jar a good value. I work in an art store, and believe me, I've tried gesso! As a low-cost alternative to higher-end brands, I'm very pleased with this one.

When you want the beauty of the rock to shine through in your rock painting, this is a great base coat to use
5/5

I'm using this product to basecoat rocks for the "kindness rock" project because I like how the natural color of the rocks shows through where I'm not painting. This lets the natural beauty of the skin shine through while also providing a firm, non-slip foundation. Painting surface with a porous surface. If you're painting an entire rock one color, use white gesso; otherwise, use this if you want to keep some of the natural rock look. Gesso, acrylic paints, and a gloss varnish are used to paint the rocks in the picture.

If you want to try something new, this is a good size to buy
4/5

I wanted to see if I could use this on coloring pages to prevent alcohol bleedthrough. based markers (like Sharpies) and watercolor (I don't get bleedthrough with watercolor, but regular paper warps and wrinkles a lot). It ACTUALLY WORKS FOR THAT OBJECTIVE- There was no bleed-through from the marker. However, because I failed to tape down the coloring book before applying the gesso, the gesso caused the pages to warp even more. I don't care for the gritty texture on the page, but gesso is supposed to add texture to the surface it's applied to. In many cases, the texture aids the adhesion of paint and other media. This is something I've learned from using gesso to prepare canvas, artboards, and even paper mache and wood surfaces for crafting (where I usually used traditional white gesso). I've never used clear gesso before, but it does dry transparent. I don't plan on using this for coloring books, but I have an old doll whose head needs to be repainted, and I'd like to see the old paint underneath (basically, I SHOULD completely remove all of the old finish and repaint, but I'm lazy). br>br>One tip: I recommend using a foam brush for a smooth application because a regular brush will leave marks from the bristles and make the surface bumpier than it already is. If you use a drier medium, such as colored pencil, to go over the dried gesso, it will go on unevenly and "catch" on the tiny ridges created by brush bristles. Whether or not I would purchase this product again depends on whether I require gesso for more traditional purposes. A small amount of something can go a long way. As I have a mostly full jar of white gesso in my supply closet from YEARS ago (I haven't done any traditional oil or acrylic painting in years), it will keep for a long time if the lid is tightly screwed on.

Priming paint by numbers is a breeze with this tool
5/5

For paint-by-numbers, the clear version is ideal. It really fills in all the gaps and makes painting on your canvas a breeze. This is a product that I would recommend to anyone who paints by number.

It is simple to put on
5/5

This product is ideal for Bible journaling. It's simple to apply, and it gives the page a nice texture (almost a rough texture). Because my Bible pages are so thin, I can use watercolors, sharpie pens, paint pens, or anything else I want to create art in my Bible without worrying about it showing through on the other side, and the texture of the gesso once dried gives my page a thicker feel. Since I received it, I've used it for almost every entry, and it's really not that much! I'm pretty sure one of these could cover every page of my Bible!.

I'm glad I went ahead and bought the bigger jar
5/5

I use this product in my Bible to protect the pages from bleed-through art products, and I like how easy it is to apply and how quickly it dries, allowing me to get right into my Bible art journaling. The product has a consistency similar to yogurt and can easily be applied with a brush or makeup sponger. I'm glad I went with the 4 oz jar over the 2 oz tube - it's much more convenient. It's a little more expensive, but the benefits outweigh the price.

This is without a doubt the best clear gesso I've ever used
5/5

I believe I've already reviewed this product, but I can't recommend it highly enough. I used to use Art Basics clear gesso, but I don't anymore because it's difficult to remember which products can be used on top of it and it's gritty. Dina Wakley has a nice, smooth finish that works well with the media I've chosen. Colored pencils work particularly well with this gesso because it gives the Journaling Bible pages more "tooth," allowing you to lay on more colors with more depth. It dries quickly when using a heat tool. My Bible pages curl slightly as a result of the product, so I either use Washi tape to keep them flat or close the Bible for a day or two until I win the battle and the pages stay flat. I've started prepping multiple pages at once so that they're ready to work on when I am. I wouldn't journal without it, and I think the extra time spent preparing pages is well worth it. This clear gesso is the only one I would recommend for Art Journaling.

Paint-by-numbers is a lot of fun
5/5

This is useful for smoothing out the canvas before painting by numbers. I've been painting pbns for a while, but I recently received a new canvas that was causing me a lot of grief. There are a lot of small divots, and it took a lot of paint to make everything look even and smooth. In a test spot, one coat of this really helped fill in those little divots; I believe two coats will be required. I experimented with a gray brown color (as seen in the attached photos) with and without gesso. The gesso-covered area is the only color in the picture. Although it's difficult to tell, those small divots appear to be smaller, and my paint glided over that section with ease. The color isn't really even in all areas in the other picture, which is something I'm trying to avoid. I would strongly suggest it.
