Paper is included in the kit in five sheets.
You don't need to put any paper on top of the stone to prevent the wax from bleeding through. In theory, it could damage it if the paper tore and you inscribed on it, but as long as you have your paper down, it will not.

I found the grave, but it was SO worn out that the inscription could not be read and I was not able to enhance the photos I took to make them It was my first time ordering one of these kits and it was great I went back to the cemetery and wrapped the paper/fabric around the stone and used the rubbing bar enclosed. Even just looking at the "paper" itself would be enough to get the job done. The set up is really nice. If the wax colors were available in a few more colors, I would have loved it. I know this may not be your cup of tea, but if it is, then do it! It is great to have this kit on hand.
