But my purchase turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The charcoal is consistently of high quality, and these pencils can be sharpened with either a hand held or an electric sharpener - If you take it slowly, you might be able to get away with it. The different grades are useful, and the value is high given the price - I've bought a lot of charcoal pencils in the hopes that they would work - but they haven't. a major letdown - This is a unique case!.
These were purchased for my daughter, who absolutely adores them. She put them to use on the same day she got them. She's a beginner who's never used these kinds of pencils before. She claims that the soft pencils don't sharpen well and that when she uses them, the lead falls out. Aside from that, they're exactly what they're supposed to be.
The lines are absorbed by the paint and there is no bleed through.
Sketching with these pencils is a breeze. I like how they are exactly as described in terms of hardness and softness. It's easier to switch from one to the other when you're working on your art.
These are the best charcoal pencils I've ever had the pleasure of using. The 'leads' are strong enough that I can use a knife to sharpen the pencils, and the tracing they leave blends in beautifully. Excellent!.
These charcoal pencils are great for sketching, and I like that they come in three different hardness grades in the handy storage case. I'm going to buy more.
I bought some to use in my drawing class, but they're awful. They have the feel of regular pencils and do not blend. Charcoal is not an option.
Regrettably, this was the worst art supply purchase I have ever made. When I sharpen charcoal, it always breaks off, so I never get a point, and when the tip does stay intact after sharpening, it breaks after four or five strokes on paper. It's not the sharpener because the other brands of pencils I have don't break when I sharpen them. Instead, I recommend the Ebehard Faber brand.
