I have done the eyes using conte crayons. For the rest, I used compressed charcoal in black and white. In college I used chalk and white conte crayon for the white. This was my first time using compressed charcoal in white. A white conte crayon with a lot more intensity (use less) is the kind I prefer to use.
On paper, it appears to be black and of good quality. It is so compressed that I love it. I have found that this charcoal is the best I've found.
This product does not have a substitute that I can find, so I can use it. The fact that I must buy an entire box of different degrees of softness when all I want is the softest frustrates me. Another issue is the square format of the document, rather than How is it that an artist would prefer a square drawing tool to one that's rounded?.
In terms of the product, it is exactly what it says. The compressed charcoal goes down in a nice solid black (for various shades, get vine or willow). In general, there are at least one or two snapped sticks when they arrive. It may be better to take more care as they are shipped (though it is unknown at what point they are damaged).
This is what I use in class for an Art class in college and I really like it. Using them, I created some pretty cool art.
