As I expected, this set is actually better than any other set I've seen, at least two times as good as one of the smaller models In the past, I have purchased similar-sized shaped sets at a similar price point. I was shocked to discover that it was so big when it arrived! All things considered (brushes, ink stick, ink stone) are a nice manageable size, not too small like the other set, and if you grind it long enough you can get a nice dark black The quality of the brushes was pleasantly surprising to me As of now, I've only used one of the four brushes, but it has performed well with diluted washes, thick strokes in heavy ink, dry strokes made with the sides of the brush, and delicate point work as well. Below I have attached the three paintings I have so far made from the set I tried using two different kinds of inexpensive paper and two different brushes to get different effects with the same ink and brush. My results are not creative, but they show what I was able to achieve using the same ink and brush.

So far, I'm pleased with the overall quality of this set. I'll be using it for my college Chinese calligraphy class. It comes in an attractive package, smells nice, and comes with what looks like a cute matcha bowl - or, you could use it to contain water.

For a beginner kit, this calligraphy set is a great buy. It doesn't come with instructions so I have no idea how to use it. In addition, there are faint traces of wet feet on the surface. No need to panic - some baking soda or potpourri should solve the problem. I wouldn't give it as a gift because of the faint smell, but if you're looking to learn a new skill, it's a great deal!.

As for the grinding stone, the ink stick is a beautiful piece, the weights are exactly right for rice paper, the water bowl is a nice size, the brushes look fine, and the brush holder is very nice and big. The process of grinding the ink requires a lot of time.
