Questions & Answers

Is it possible to use these as picture frames only? (They're a lot less expensive than plain frames.) ?

The answer is usually no, because the wood is square (rather than milled for a frame) and the notches for the picture to be inserted are not present. Occasionally, they will use an actual frame and hang a canvas on it, but this is uncommon.

Is it possible to use these to frame a canvas that has already been painted? (These are less expensive than canvas frames that are empty)?

That is precisely what I did with them. On top of one of these, I layered a painted canvas (same size) that was stretched (stapled). It was a huge success.

It's fine for beginners or "practicing," but the quality isn't great, and the canvas is dented. There is no bubble wrap in this package. I will not buy it again or recommend it to anyone.
