Stitcher extraordinaire. I've tried other leather stitchers in the past, and they've all been difficult to put together and even more difficult to use. It was simple to put together, and even simpler to use. I bought it specifically to use in the construction of a wire mesh and leather mask. The large needle pierced both materials, and the thread provided held them together firmly. This is the tool you'll need if you're sewing together tough materials. As a side note, the instructions that come with it, like most things written in foreign lands, are garbage. Simply go to YouTube to find a plethora of helpful videos on how to put this together and use it.
This is a useful sewing awl made of what appears to be ebony that would look great in any home toolbox. Sails, leather, carpets, jeans, and other materials can all be patched with this product. It's a comfortable tool to hold in your left or right hand. The chuck is too brittle to use as a deterrent. After a few uses, it finally broke. Purchase a different item.
This is a fantastic tool, and the needles that come with it are fantastic. I've used previous versions of this tool, and aside from some minor improvements in build quality, nothing has really changed in the last 100 years. This tool is no slouch; the finish on the handle is excellent, and it feels good in the hand; however, the connection between the handle and the sewing mechanism could be a little tighter. A small amount of movement in the handle/metal sewing parts was felt during a hard push through some older leather. I've worked with a 100-year-old tool that still doesn't move.
These sewing awls have never been easy to work with, in my opinion. They're a real pain to deal with. They're ideal for minor repairs and projects. Having said that, I prefer this one with the spool close to the tip. I also have a sewing awl with a spool in the handle that feeds the thread. Although it appears to be sleek, I prefer the design with the spool closer to the needle. I believe it makes it easier to feed the thread.
We have an old pop-up camper with the stitching on the awning bag coming apart, so we bought this to try to fix it ourselves, and it's working out great. The only issue was that one of the needles broke due to the thickness of the project, so I'm not sure if it's the strongest for heavy-duty projects. However, it was very easy to use and should last us until our next voyage!.
I like that it looks and performs similarly to more expensive models at a more affordable price for a beginner. Work similar to what you'd find in a professional classroom. Quick delivery, simple setup, and a comfortable grip for small hands are all advantages.
I haven't had the opportunity to put it to use yet. However, I appreciate the fact that it exists.
