It is true that they keep closed like safety pins. As stitch markers, they serve as a handy tool for me when These pins allow me to attach labels to my projects without snagging the yarn or fabric. Also, I use them to pin my row counter. They are just like a safety pin and they don't pop open, but I have not had one pop open.

They will be used as stitch markers after being beaded. In addition to a note and satin bag, these came with a nice note.
There's no need to worry about breaking them like plastic ones. There is one thing I wish was larger about them their size. It doesn't seem like there's anything really to grab onto. It doesn't matter to me, but they are. I couldn't even fit it inside my fingers, it was just 8 inches long. The product is of good quality, and I will probably get some more colored ones in the future. My work is usually light, so I thought the black yarn would stand out when I used it. Providing I know how to find them, they do that quite well.
