More sizes will be added in the future, but for the time being, 12 is the only size available alone. It comes in a quantity of 25. I hope this information is useful.
Three needles, each measuring 212" in length, were included in the package I received. 1 needle, 2 3/4" in length; 1 needle, 3" in length The length was proportional to the needle thickness. I'm not sure if all of the needles in each package are the same. I'm ordering this item for the first time.
Yes, you'll require a few additional tools. For heavy leather, a leather all punch or a sailors thimble might be appropriate. The Herringbone Darning Stitch is something I would use. I made a special needle for myself by grinding a large needle to a sharp point for about an inch on all four sides. Your thread should be waxed or coated twice. Make use of high-end thread.
No, but rubbing them in a single direction on a silk scarf will magnetize them in no time.
Selected User Reviews For Wm. Smith & Son 5-pk of #13-19 Sailmakers' Needles
The sail needles are of excellent quality, are sturdy and well-polished, and perform admirably. I would strongly advise anyone to use them. br>They're a little pricey, but quality comes at a cost, and I've found that it's better to pay a little more up front for quality than to wish you had and then buy the best quality later. Then you realize you could have saved money in the long run by buying the higher-quality item first.
I decided to stock up on heavy needles after breaking through several large eye needles while attempting to wire artificial flower arrangements. When this popped up, I was looking through all the usual suspects, trying to find a package that didn't include circular needles, had more than one with a sharp triangular point, or didn't have bad reviews claiming the needle broke after a single use. br>br>Deserves a shot. These are extremely durable, with a razor-sharp tip. They're being used to make holes in "silk" flowers, plastic stems, and leaves. After that, all I have to do is thread the wire through the hole. I was able to place the needle's tip where I wanted the hole, turn it upside down, and force the flower onto the needle to create the hole for the first time. I had a thick piece of cardboard under my eye and had no issues with the needle. I didn't even need pliers to remove them, and I was able to do so with a lot of (obviously incorrect) force on the eye. I was able to complete everything in an hour, whereas the night before I had struggled for hours, breaking several needles, smooshing a flower or two, and only having 2 small blooms to show for my efforts. br>br>Is it expensive? Not when compared to other packages of sharp large eye needles, where one or two would suffice, but the eye lacks the strength of these and they snap off. This is an excellent choice if you require a strong, large-eyed sharp needle.
These are, without a doubt, the best sail needles available. By any stretch of the imagination, I am not an expert on sail needles, or sewing/sewing needles in general. I did, however, find myself in need of heavy duty twine needles for my family's emergency kits, so I spent some time on-line looking for them. line attempting to learn more about the topic - without exception - 'w. smithing Those who make a living making sails have recommended son' sail needles as among the best to buy on a number of websites devoted to the subject. br>Because I'm not familiar with the subject, I can only compare these by handling/visually comparing them to other heavy duty/sail needles I've previously purchased on Amazon; Other companies produced/sold it. It's like night and day, and these are far superior to the rest. They're forged, with very sharp [triangularly sharpened] points, smooth extra long [for thicker twines] eyes, and overall superb quality, which confirms all the praises and recommendations I've read. br>br>I admire it when a company can put so much pride, quality, and tradition into something as seemingly insignificant as needles. Heavy duty needles of excellent quality aren't a petty, mundane product, and were once valued as highly as any other life-essential item, such as high-quality blades/knives, tools, and so on. However, in today's world, such items have lost their significance and importance for the average person. Whatever the case may be. In terms of simple practical use tools, these needles are almost a work of art. Even if you sew thick fabrics on a regular basis, you'll probably never need to buy new needles because these should last a lifetime and remain sharp. You might want to lubricate them with mineral oil after each use, and I think a leather palm would be useful to have for working with tough materials [leather, sails, thick cloth sewing].
I expected a higher level of quality from a UK product. Two of the five needles were blunted and could only pass through cotton canvas with a lot of effort (due to a poor grinding process), but they were sharpened with a fine stone and a little elbow grease. I was disappointed a second time when the eye on the 16 GA needle snapped. Normally, this happens when you wiggle the needle through heavy leather (which is why I never do it), but this happened as I pulled it through 4oz chrome tan leather (which is thin and soft). The larger gauges, on the other hand, seem to be holding up well. I did use a fine stone to file off some thin ridges along the eye of the 14 Gauge that caused it to bind in the.
NEEDLES CAPABLE OF SEWING LEATHER I've tried everything else and had no idea these were available. I do the majority of my sewing on machines, but I do have to do a few hand stitches now and then. These are absolutely stunning. I make knives as well as sheaths. Fine machining is something that I am familiar with. These spears, on the other hand, possess all of these qualities. The long ground edges pierce the leather like no other I've seen before. I'm going to place another order for some more packs. worth at least twice as much as the asking price. You will not be sorry if you choose this option. I will keep my word.
This is the real deal. This set was purchased for my own personal use. I keep another set on the boat that I bought 30 years ago. They are indefinitely lasting. They are still as good as the day I purchased them.
br>br>This set is a fantastic value, and the needles are of excellent quality. These will last for a long time, from their intended use to general sewing.
They are all polished to a high sheen. My intention was to use them for leather work, which I believe they will be capable of. The points are sharp but polished, indicating that they were designed for canvas rather than leather.
