This makes it impossible for the thread to slip off the needle. I have only retrieved one thing useful from the kit, namely the needle threader, however I did not need to use it because the needles' eyes were so large.
Tatting needles of large size are ideal for beginning tatters. It has become my favorite hobby after I found needle tatting. It just wasn't for me - I tried shuttle tatting, but it wasn't for me - To juggle a shuttle around with my hands so clumsy and numb would mean a lot of pain. The larger needles in this set are how I prefer to use them. I generally use the smaller needles, but the large ones are great too. In an effort to give my clothes a bit of character, I made a few jumbo split ring tatted necklaces with chunky yarn. Probably the best choice for a beginner would be the large needles and a thick thread since thin needles tend to bend and warp, and because the thread is smaller it is more difficult to distinguish what is being done.
That said- I find myself using the smaller needles more often, although I'm so glad I picked up a pack of the larger needles to build.
Keeping in mind that the sizes reflect needle tatting with yarn, this set has yarn sizes for needle tatting. Light-weight dk to worsted and light bulky can all be knit on these needles. If you are looking to do some experimentation, this set is probably too big for thread.
There is a lot of difficulty in sliding.
Knitting and crochet were two things I tried to learn. My attempt did not go well, but I was already familiar with needle tatting and had a variety of yarns at home. Tatting needles sized according to yarn size are definitely worth trying, and I'm glad I tried them. Despite the easy threading of the eyes and the firm needles, it is easy to hold yarn of different weights. Although there are some downsides to them, there are also some upsides as well. I can't tat with them as many stitches as I would like since they aren't as long than the tatting needles I use for size 10 and 20 thread. In any case, if they were longer, it would be impossible to use them at all, so it isn't really a negative. It's just a minor inconvenience that I'm more than willing to overlook for the sake of being able to do large.
The work I did with them was enjoyable. My hands felt comfortable with the needles and I found them to work well.
The needles are larger so yarn is used instead of thread when tatting. The best way for me to convey my ideas with tatted work is to make them bolder and more dramatic. The needles are just as finely machined and formed as the smaller needles I used when I first started tatting.
I've used the smaller type needles and scissors before, but haven't yet used these It will be exciting to try these needles with thicker yarns.
