Since I have been tatting for over 45 years and teach it in adult education classes, where I have written a textbook on the subject, I have taught the subject for more than 3 years.
I bought them for my wife as a gift. She loves them! It is easy for her to use these because she has a small hand. Wife happiness is the key to a long and prosperous marriage.
While these are great for the price, I do not plan to use them for tatting. They will be used for the butterfly loom that I am making. There are strings where the squares meet so you can tie them together where they cross. The 8x8 makes it easy to wind the strings all onto one and work off of it. I used to cut my strings too much because they would get tangled, but now it is easy to wind on. It seems to work pretty well. Despite the good quality of the product, the points at both ends were quite sharp, causing me to scratch my hands a lot. Now that I took an emery board and filled them down, it is exactly the result I was looking for.
It is easier to tat with a needle. For what it's worth, I used a tatting shuttle for the first time instead of a tatting needle- As a matter of fact, I was blown away by how big they The problem is that even though my hands aren't small (I'd assess them as average), I cannot get this to work. Ultimately the product isn't bad in the least, but if you're a beginner it would probably be easier to use needle tatting.
It is the perfect size. The loading of the site was simple.
I am glad that I bought these shuttles as they were perfect for my first foray into tatting. Although they worked well, I found my old, arthritic hands could not work well with shuttles, so I bought tatting needles to use instead. I had no idea such a thing existed (even though I knew I should). We were able to try out a new skill on a budget.
A pair of these shuttles is one of my favorites. Cheap but very sturdy, these are a good buy. It has a pointed edge that I like. As long as you are not pressing too hard, the needle should not catch as you are stitching. Additionally, the shuttles hold a decent amount of thread, so if you are working on a big project, you won't need to refill them as often.
There are a couple of shuttles that I really like. Amazon has them so I was glad to find them there.
