Questions & Answers

When it comes to home decor projects, how well does the machine handle heavier fabrics (canvas, upholstery fabric)?

I use these things with heavy materials and leather without any issues. A heavy duty needle in the appropriate size for the item at hand. A high quality thread is required. You will need to adjust the knob on the left side of the machine if needed, particularly when working with The walking foot or presser foot "A" with lock normally serves for walking. Longer stitches will be more effective. A slow pace is always the best strategy. My experience ranges from silk to lace to upholstery to leather to quilting to placing patches on jackets, and I have done all of the above with no problem. The Singer model I own is my third machine and I keep a Singer serger on hand in case I need it. The stylist I inherited from my mother (late 1960s to early 1970s model) and the stylist I own from the 1990s. I feel just as confident with this machine as I did with my previous ones. It is reasonable to assume they have been pushed to their limits. Things are looking up for this one. Some of the jobs had to be done by my machine that my friends' Vikings and Janones just could not handle. You do not find anything less here but a well built machine. All you need to do is read the manual and learn it. It will explain what each stitch and feature will do and won't I see several reviews where the reviewers are novices to any machine they refer to. This is fine if the stitching is easy, but many people will give negative reviews without knowing what they are talking about. In my opinion, this will most likely be the last machine I'll ever own, and I am in my mid 40s. This engine is a work horse and I plan to keep it tuned so it'll be in good shape. I've been working on it for many years, and I look forward to more years to come. Although I have wonderful designs, I have an industrial embroidery machine in my family business that does a better job of Rather than a heavy, high thread count design, the designs here are more modest and niche. I'm awarding this machine a score of 100 for its design, features, and ability to sew heavy-weight projects without any hiccups! I hope you enjoy

The best sewing machine I can get that won't be too complicated to use is what I need since I am fairly new to sewing. It looks like the machine I am looking for might be this one. It was disappointing to read very negative Is there any way you can help me?

Yes, if you have the time and patience to read about everything and try it out one step at a time, you'll get great value for your money. As well as cutting the thread after you have finished stitching, it will thread the machine and you can check on its LED display when the needle is unthreaded among a number of The buttonholes on this garment can be adjusted to a variety of styles (600). Sewing is a joy for me and I have been doing it for over 60 years many of the new features don't surprise This is why I advise the reader to take his or her time to read and to be patient to try every type of foot and stitch. A simple machine for sewing is not for you if you want to sit down and sew.

Is there any feature of the 9985 that makes me willing to pay twice as much for it as the What does that look like? Just UI improvements and stitches added?

Despite the increasing stitch count (9960, 9980, 9985) and some improvement or enhancement to computerization with each new model number, they still have fewer stitches. There's no doubt that the 9960 is an excellent machine. The 9980 added a larger screen along with an advisory component (troubleshooter/advisor bundled with It added stitches which can be accomplished by 9985 as well as allowing the advisor to speak rather than only display text on screen. The 9980 appealed to me more than the 9970 because the voice did not matter to me, but I did want the advisor feature. Here is my opinion that the MANUAL contains a lot of great information! In some areas Singer will always be an industry leader, and I would say they are leading right now in writing the manual/introducing an "advisor," as well as in accessories. There is a generous accessories package included with all 99xx machines. You are saving quite a bit of money not having to buy additional accessories!

Is this machine capable of completing seams with a seam finisher? Is that the same as ?

A serged seam is created by the use of several stitches located on the 9960 which stitch the seam and overcast the edge at the same time. A side cutter is required to complete the appearance of a serged seam. Those who want this accessory will need to purchase it separately because it is not part of the standard accessories.

This program is great in most respects, but a couple of important aspects are missed
3/5

Upon receiving it for the first time, I enjoyed my Quantum Stylist immensely. I'd say that's a little bit off. I was able to read only half of the letter the first time I tried the alphabet. The needle never reached the left half of its travel and I didn't want to send the machine back. After studying the problem, I decided to send it back. That seemed like a fairly simple fix or one that was quite difficult. Having turned the machine upside down on my lap for awhile, I realized there was something like a tiny hook that just hung out by itself near the needle support. By using needlenose pliers I pushed it into the hole where it looked like it belonged, and it worked. I was able to get everything done! In that case, I would have given 4 stars if I had reviewed it at that time. It was either not packaged sturdily enough to prevent the little arm from being shaken off in shipping, or it was not assembled or tested properly. It is not clear which problem occurred, but it should not have happened. I was very happy with the machine after that, until I finished a quilt top and went to use the walking foot to quilt it. My discovery of a major problem made me realize what was wrong. When using the walking foot and the quilting bar, you cannot use them together! It's a big problem there. The walking foot will not take the guilting bar, but there are other feet that will. In case the walking foot is used for quilting, how are you expected to keep an even distance between rows? In a matter of minutes, Singer Customer Care called me back. According to them, there is no way to use the quilting bar with the walking foot, and there is no other machine with a walking foot that can fit the 9960 that has that capability. In addition, I have not been able to find an aftermarket one. I am not a happy camper, needless to say. The machine sounded awesome, but if I knew that up front, I probably wouldn't have purchased it. Beware, quilters. There is one final problem I have not been able to isolate. You cannot remove a bobbin from the spindle if the bobbin winder fills a bobbin as specified in the instructions. This could be a problem with me personally (me) or it could be something wrong with the machine. Two bobbins were destroyed as soon as I tried to pry them free. As far as I know, there is no release lever, but I haven't checked with Customer Care. As for Customer Care, I'm so frustrated I think I just want to purchase a separate bobbin winder instead of trying to solve the problem. As a result, I did not deduct another star from the review, because I'm not certain if it's a fault of theirs or mine. When the machine was first purchased, there were some questions about whether 15J or 15J bobbins were used. Different tutorials about the machine from Singer actually contradict each other. It was decided to use 15 and not 15J after speaking with Customer Care. My confusion now stems from the fact that I am wondering if that was the right move. I apologize that this has run on for In general, it's a fantastic machine that is easy to use. Clothes and basic stuff come out well. It was advertised as a machine for quilting, but I believe that it falls short in that department.

You have a few hours left! This was one of the features I was looking forward to- Rich machine for 20 minutes, then after 20 minutes In a few days, the hand wheel became difficult to turn, the machine became noisy and creaky, and cleaning the underside of the plate did not The Amazon machine was replaced, and when I opened the box with my supposedly "new" machine, I found it had been totally used (see pictures)! In addition to dirt and dust on the surface, I discovered a chip on the bottom
3/5

When I removed the plate, I found that a lot of filth and lint were inside. Oh, there is more to it. The connector port fell out of the connector after I plugged it in because I prefer to use a foot pedal. I can't run the machine with the foot pedal, so it isn't practical. I'm so glad. It beeped when I tried to use the start/stop button, and I noticed straight away that the lettering on this button was worn away from heavy use. Is it okay to sell used machines to Amazon under the guise that they are new machines? I just can't take it! In the meantime, I await the third machine to arrive tomorrow and will see how it works. In the absence of a full refund, this third machine is all I am willing to accept.

5/5

The Bernina 550 is a better machine, since this Singer is less expensive, but the touch screen is superior as it is not only a color screen, but also with a black and white option. There is no such thing as theirs I think it is more clear now. A comparison cannot be drawn between the machines based on their appearance. There is nothing quite like the look of this Singer in person, and it's purple too. Honestly, Singer knocks it out of the park with this one in terms of presentation. It is truly amazing. It literally took me a while to exhale when I pulled it out of the box. The photos do not do it justice. It would have been nice to have a knee lifter on it, as my Singer 580 embroidery machine does, but I should consider the superb quality of the 9985 considering its low price to be plenty consoling. The Bernina 550 only has 177 stitches, which means that with 960 stitches, it blows it out of the water. A person's eye is drawn to the quality of the stitch, and the Singer 9985 stitches just as well as any machine worth tens of thousands of dollars. It has a lot of decorative stitches and a bunch of functions, for which there are not yet a few I would complain about. I have seen nothing that is less than perfect so far. What is really surprising is the degree of precision you can get out of decorative stitches in this machine. An example might be you would like to place decorative arrows around the face of a collar or the placket of a shirt. When you stitch a sample, you can find out how many arrows you are getting per inch, and then program your machine to run a set number of arrows and stop, so you can precisely pivot and turn or replicate a certain line of stitching, etc. Using a computer to edit and select stitches is easy and intuitive if you are used to using one. The screen makes it easy to tell what you can and cannot do once you see the stitch on it. Not all stitches can be elongated or made wider the same way, but you can see what you can and cannot do by looking at it. Taking all of this into account, your stitch count is far beyond the advertised 960. I recommend the use of 40-gauge thread for the best decorative stitching On the top, thread the machine embroidery machine with rayon or polyester thread, and in the bobbin, thread the sewing machine with good quality polyester thread in the same color as your item. Attach a transparent satin stitch foot to complete the operation. A tearaway or a wash-away You will see a huge difference if you put a stabilizer under your project. Some stitches can be flipped or rotated, so if you want, you can stitch a line of left-handed stitches Triangles on either side of a line of right-angled triangles For a cuff, you might want to run some stitches between the facing triangles run straight lines in between, etc. The possibilities of creative design are endless when you have these advanced editing capabilities, and the results are perfect since you can modify exactly where each stitch begins and ends. The wide range of stitches provides the ability to add embroidery to even the most basic garment, making it stand out. Pinterest and Instagram photos of embroidered garments have inspired me to combine multiple rows of decorative stitches with straight stitching around garment edges, repeating the thread colors I used in the embroidered motifs I did on the front, back, and sleeves of the Singer Quantum Futura 580. As a fashion sewer, I never found that built-in stitches added much in the past since regular sewing thread can make them look disappointing, but thanks to the options provided by this machine and the wide variety of threads available for machine embroidery, fashion sewing has become much more fun than ever before. It is hand quilted - A combination of look stitch and the walking foot offers a unique feature typically found only on high-end garments There are machines at the ends of the line. Even though I was skeptical that a machine at this price point would produce a decent quilting stitch, following the directions in the manual and selecting the correct tension has produced a great result.

The manual is pretty good, as well. My usual practice when I get a new machine is to read through every page of the manual and trial every stitch, technique, and foot to learn as much as possible and ensure that everything is working Even though I have not completed the learning process yet because I am eager to get to the fun bits, I have read through the manual and I believe that everything I need to know is in it Obviously, the quilting section does not pretend to be giving instructions on how to make quilts in any way. It's surprising that they don't make any mention of how you make them. The foot of the page is not feed until several pages later, and the free-flowing font is used Based on this guide, it's probably not a good idea to attempt motion quilting or stippling, although YouTube videos exist on the subject. Singer manuals annoy me in that the English version is on the left-hand side of the page The French and Spanish versions of the page can be found on the right hand side. I think it would be much more efficient for all users if they assigned each language its own page. In this manual, the size of the print and illustrations is small due to its small format. The Singer site has the manual, but I need to download it to a device that allows me to zoom in so I can read it. On the topic of instructions, I want to point out that this utilizes size 15 bobbins, rather than size 15J as the "customers also bought" copy below might suggest. In the end, it's a minor difference, but if you use the wrong bobbins, you'll do a lot of damage during your This machine appeared on the market in September, but I wasn't really sure what it was. I initially selected it because I thought it would use 15J bobbins, which would be However, this is not the case, and it can be a bit of a hassle. Singer brand bobbins are the only ones that work. Cheap copies, which are not the same size as Singer brand bobbins, are not compatible. This is a hassle, but I guess it's just worth it to have all these new functions that I never expected. Is it purple? Did I tell you so? The Singer 9985 is a perfect companion machine to my Singer 580 embroidery machine. I am thrilled that the Singer 9985 has such a large selection of stitches and features for such a low price, and I received the machine free of charge. A local retailer of expensive brands does not sell this machine, which I guess is why she offered to special order it for me at full list price. *snort* If I were trying to sell a comparable appliance for almost $5,000, I wouldn't want this one sitting next to it. A big thank you to Amazon!.

That's the end of the problem
4/5

As I mentioned in my last review, I was not happy with the thread guide on the machine. Whenever I used invisible thread, the thread guide was cut and my thread was cut. The problem could not be solved with a command strip, but I used a piece of staple to fix the problem. That's the end of the problem. So far I've only had that problem in the last six years since I've had my machine. Last year I took it in for cleaning (first time). The service technician said it was a great machine. It only needed a good As you can see, I have a lot to see. The machine I have reviewed is an outstanding piece of equipment. I love it. I reverse my previous review.
