I have been sewing for more than 30 years. The Viking 1 + I own was a brand new car when I bought it in the 1990s. That was the top of the line for the time and it was very expensive, but I did not like the embroidery of it. This method never worked for me the thread would tangle and break and I was always left with a Two of my granddaughters are now dressed up, so I no longer have to control my wardrobe. As an adult, I have struggled with medical issues since the early 2000s, so sewing was the last thing on my mind. I have since undergone a couple of surgeries and am feeling good now. While I wanted to try my hand at machine embroidery again, the Viking was out of date. My initial thoughts were to buy another Viking, but after reading so many negative reviews about the Jade (I was looking at the Viking Jade) I couldn't see the point of the purchase. After much research, I decided on the Brother 600 after it had excellent reviews and had essentially the same features as the Viking for only half the price. It used to be that I bought Brother machines for my daughters in the past, but they were the basic, cheap models. The were never durable enough to stand the test of time. This was the reason why I was so nervous when I bought it. The whole experience has been pleasantly surprising for me. It's amazing what this machine can do. My friends, who are both nurses at a hospital, have asked me to make items for their neonatal unit, including sundresses for my granddaughters with matching purses, zippered pouches for my sewing accessories, and a whole host of things for the unit. The job I have at the moment is full time in the office, too (And yes, I work full time). The device has only been mine for a few weeks, but it is getting a lot of use. The preparations for making my sister's birthday cake are almost complete The initials of my law and myself were embroidered on zippered totes with tropical themes. There are embroidery designs. A beautiful job is done by it. There is also the option to upload patterns from the internet. I like that you can use the included embroidery patterns. It's a baby step I haven't taken yet, but I will. It is the perfect machine for those who are new to sewing as well as those who are seasoned veterans.
This machine has a great instruction manual and is very easy to use. Its threading feature is also very nice and works better than the previous model with the cassette threader (a few more steps, but it works well.
It's really easy to use this new model and it embroiders very nicely. That it has a memory stick port makes it super easy to use any pattern or name you've got. As most of my work involves embroidery of names, I use Amazing Designs lettering software. now use the Amazing Designs software to design names then transfer them via the memory stick to the new Brother embroidery machine. The older machines tend to have a similar feature, but you have to connect a cord to transfer the designs, which I found difficult since my computer was in another.
Due to the fact that I am an avid quilter, I bought this model in order to replace my beloved CS6000i. I tried a few test stitches, but after just a few, the machine began giving an error message that the needle is bent or there is a tangle of thread. It did not matter how hard I tried to service it (I used every needle provided and no thread tangled), the machine did not sew. As this seems to be a Brother issue, it's the reason I replaced my old one. I have returned this model and have ordered a Singer Quantum instead. It has an extended warranty and I'm going to use a lot more stitches for the money.
I just finished putting this machine to the test by making a casual buttondown shirt and lined wool dress pants out of heavy quilting cotton - I am very pleased with this machine. This is a pleasant surprise for me! Previously, my straight stitching was done with a vintage Singer machine my other straight stitching was done with an inexpensive Brother (XR4040) and my serging was done with a Brother 1034D. It was pleasant to be surprised with the stitch quality of the machine, how easily it could be used for embroidery, and how smoothly it runs and how quietly it runs. I added a walking foot so it comes with just the right amount of accessories (I wish it came with more). We would like to see an invisible zipper foot and either a rolled hem foot or a binding foot included in the set. Although these are plentiful and cheap on Amazon, they are not hard to come by. The pros are Please note - Smooth and Quiet
*Good Value at a low price - It has a much easier user interface than previous SE400 models. The stitch quality is excellent* - I love the thread cutter because it keeps the threads tucked to the bottom -> Although it does not embroider, this is still worth the price even if it did. I found it surprising how well it cut through *10 layers of heavy quilting cotton and interfacing -- with minimal fuss* Please note - This will probably not last as long as my 1934 Singer, but I still feel as though it will last for quite a while. - Vertical thread with caps is a pain (I use larger cones and king spools and put them in a glass or mug behind the machine and skip the pins
- There is only a 4x4 embroidery on the shirt. I use Stitch Era Universal instead of this software as it includes embroidery software, and the included designs are mediocre (I use Stitch Era Universal instead) - Machine stitched too slowly - doesn't stitch as fast as an industrial machine - A home machine's feed dogs aren't that good (average for a regular machine, not as good as a straight stitch machine), though a walking foot can help.
