You might want to check out the Triplets, they are much better than the Mono, and they aren't a lot more expensive.
This was necessary for a number of labs and class trips as I am a geology major. Professors always advised us against a cheaper one and to invest in higher quality, but I used this one as well as others who spent double the amount and did not notice any change. lasted through all of my classes and did what I needed it to do. I would definitely recommend it.
It is a great hand lens for students of geology or anyone who wants to magnify small items like rocks and minerals. Natural phenomena are all around us.
There is no truth in the 10x/20x magnifying glass. There's not much magnification, and the lenses are not good. 2x/3x magnification is closer to the norm. There is nothing better than plastic magnifying glasses given to kids.
If you plan on letting kids use it, you might want to do so. Lenses with small focal lengths are not as clear all the way to the edge as those with larger focal lengths. I prefer my old Bausch & Lomb monitor to this one because it is smaller and less usable This is Lom. The price is such that I won't feel bad if my granddaughter drops the doll and it.
I have seen some complaints about spherical aberration - don't let that deter you. As a result, it was an incredibly valuable purchase for me. When I found two decent pieces of equipment for less than ten bucks, I thought it would cost me at least $40 each.
Spend a bit more and get a name brand that will last longer.
