Unlike many cheaper brands, it does not easily crumble. This is what I use to melt Aluminum, Gold, Silver, Lead, and Copper in my home forge. Other, less expensive brands I've tried haven't lasted nearly as long. I've put this through 18 burns of varying durations so far, and it still has the same properties as when I first took it out of the package. I use much less propane to heat my forge now because this keeps in what appears to be around 98% of the heat and I will never go back to coal firing!.
I understand that Amazon wants me to use the word "warmth" in my review, but I don't think Amazon realizes that a fiberglass blanket isn't exactly something you want to cuddle up with on your couch while sipping hot cocoa! This item, on the other hand, was purchased for use in my maple syrup evaporator, and it works perfectly. The size is nearly an inch smaller than it appears on the label. So, if you require a specific width of 12", make sure to order extra.
Why is it that this product arrived with the package identifying it as having a thermal rating of up to 2300 degrees on Amazon's description, but it has a thermal rating of 2600 degrees?.
I cut it out with a regular pair of shears and pressed it into the forge's interior. My body temperature had risen significantly. I'm glad I installed this product; it worked so well that I bought more when I needed to rebuild my foundry's top. Between the masonry and the steel bottom, I added a layer. The top will no longer overheat.
This isn't the second time I've bought a package of ceramic wool for lining a forge. They are extremely effective. Along with the fire brick base, they do a fantastic job of containing the forges heat. br>Most other sellers are more expensive.
I built a new forge, and it's fantastic.
I used it behind a metal shield in the back of my camper's wood stove, where there wasn't enough room for proper air flow. It's working perfectly. Heat will not be transferred to the wall.
I'm confident in the product because I'm familiar with it and others similar to it. I'll be using it for some personal forging or kiln work.
