It's a soft foam that can be folded into a plastic bag for storage. On trays with raised edges, I use these mats. They're just thick enough to keep beads and other components from rolling away.

I never used a beading mat before, and I'm not sure how I managed without one now. The fact that the beads don't roll is something I really like. It's much easier to work on a project when you have the right surface. They're a good thickness, and I especially like this size because it fits in a half-sheet pan, which I use to keep beading projects in progress.
Velor bead mats have caused me problems in the past. The nap began to wear off after a few uses, resulting in bald spots. This bead mat has held up well and still looks as good as it did when I first purchased it. When I pick up beads, I like to rest my hand on the edge of the mat, and that's where the old mat wore out. If these ever wear out, I will definitely purchase again. So far, I've only used one, with the other serving as a backup.
The play on words was intentional. Keeps my beads, findings, and charms from strewn across the table. It's a lot better than the felt pieces I picked up at the craft store. Fibers tend to get caught in my findings when I do that. There are no loose fibers on this bead mat, so my findings won't get caught in it. It also makes it easier to stop beads from rolling around. This is something I wish I had purchased a long time ago. One mat was discolored as if it had been left in a sunny window for a long time, but the part under the cardboard was still the original color, so I deducted a star.
I would purchase this item again. I wasn't expecting the mats to be as thick as they are. Even though they were well packaged, they were wrinkled, so I had to steam iron the mats to remove the wrinkles (with a cloth on top to avoid scorching). However, a soft gray would have been preferable. I would buy them again because they are good mats. It's also worth noting that the fabric is machine washable.
I simply purchase a cheap rectangle cookie tray from Walmart and fold one of these mats in half to fit perfectly on the tray! They're extremely soft, prevent beads from rolling around, and are extremely simple to use. I'm not going to buy any more!.
These are fantastic. They're great, and the large surface area allows you to work on the mat without knocking anything over.
What is it about this beading mat that you don't like? It's made of the right stuff to keep your beads in place while you're beading. You can easily cut the fabric to make it fit your needs if necessary.
Bead trays don't work nearly as well as this method. Because the beads don't slide around as much, they can be threaded onto the needle much more quickly.
