Ice doesn't need to be removed. It melts as heat from the outside seeps through, and ice water is continually recycled to create new ice. This is actually a good thing because it cools the water in the reservoir, which then makes bigger cubes each cycle. In my opinion, the ice basket is large enough to hold about three to four drinks, so you might decide to keep more of it in the freezer if you require a large amount of ice at once. Of course, you may also just keep it in the fridge.
